A Concert Performance of a New Musical June 28th, 29th and 30th, 2013 at the Greenway Arts Alliance Theater in Los Angeles
NORTH OF SUNSET WEST OF VINE is a non-traditional, contemporary musical that will debut in Los Angeles in June 2013 as a staged reading, with a fully-produced live musical ensemble. The show combines dramatic scenes, poetic narrative, original music, lyrics and book by renowned recording artist Raya Yarbrough, who stars in the lead role. Also starring Kristofer McNeeley (Jersey Boys), Ricco Ross (Aliens), Frank Lawson (RENT), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica), Erinn Holmes and Ward Roberts (dir. Dust Up). The show is directed by Mary Jo DuPrey (UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television), and the music is directed by Bear McCreary (Composer of The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica).
The play is a coming-of-age tale about a child and her father. After her parents’ divorce, her father (Ross) goes back to performing in a nightclub on the Hollywood strip. The play begins in the present day, when the girl, as an adult, returns to Hollywood to the burned out remains of her father’s apartment. Estranged from her father, she has abandoned her dreams of being a singer. However, among the ashes she encounters a familiar ghost: the Spirit of Hollywood Boulevard (McNeeley). This enigmatic figure brings back her memories of the life she fled, and the story unfolds in flashbacks to her childhood in the 1980’s.
Her world is a unique vision of ghostly old Hollywood, where eerie jazz undercurrents juxtapose against the grit and neon of the 1980’s. Through vivid stories about the characters she meets, we see what drives a young ambitious girl away from her passions and her family, and what will ultimately bring her back.
